At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
